SMPS WAVE - Pacific Regional Conference Recap - Alternative Delivery (Part 3)

The 2015 SMPS WAVE - Pacific Regional Conference is now in the rearview mirror. While it was an amazing experience, it was impossible to catch all of the amazing presentations. Thankfully, several SMPS Fellows sat in on each presentation and shared their findings during the last session of the conference. Moderated by our own Bill Strong, FSMPS, CPSM, Owner, Bill Strong Consulting, the session provided an open discussion of the key points conference attendees should take with them. We are happy to share their findings with you on Friday mornings over the next few weeks.

Three Key Takeaways

1. The national statistics for the use of alternative delivery methods is growing exponentially - highest on the west coast (71% in Oregon, 56% in Washington, 59% in California, 58% in Alaska).

2. Within the world of 'design-build,' it is critical to perform an upfront assessment of the partnership between the contractor and the architect. A culture-fit is just as important as your combined experience or knowledge of the client.

3. Deliverables requested by the client are also vital to understand fully. Since design-build includes producing both a design & cost model, understanding exactly what the client wants to see is very important in order to gage your time and resources.
